NRFL sides had a mixed time in the North Riding Senior Cup Preliminary Round, this midweek.

It all started with Redcar Newmarket’s 5-1 defeat at Evo-Stik NPL First Division East highflyers Marske United, on Tuesday night. Marske, who play their football three divisions higher, didn’t show their superiority until the second half. The league’s leading scorer, Michael Dowse, grabbed a late consolation for Newmarket.

Boro Rangers then redressed the balance as they edged out Wearside League Richmond Town in a five-goal thriller. Ben Wheatley’s men won 3-2 thanks to Jamie Lee’s brace and Matt McQueeney’s strike.

Elsewhere on Wednesday, Fishburn Park raced into a two-goal-lead against Northern League Thornaby. Sam Richardson nodded the Whitby side into a first minute and roared on by a three-figure-crowd at Whitby Town’s Turnbull Ground, they doubled their advantage on six minutes. Youngster Adam Warrilow finished superbly and the upset looked on. However, Thornaby crucially pulled one back just before half-time and they pushed the accelerator after the interval to turn the game on its head, winning 5-2 by the finish.

Grangetown will be the next North Riding Football League side at the Turnbull Ground after defeating St Marys 1947. The sides were locked 1-1 after Conor Bentley netted for the Boys Club and Paul Vaughan for the Saints. A tense shoot-out saw Grangetown advance to visit Whitby following an 8-7 success.
